The Matthews Community Center opened in 1907 as the Town's first public school. Over the decades, the classic brick schoolhouse was expanded to meet the demands of this growing community. When the aging building faced demolition in the 1990's, the Town of Matthews stepped in with a multi-million dollar restoration effort. Now a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmark, the Community Center Provides a vital link between Matthews’ picturesque past and dynamic future.
Community Center Hours:
Monday through Friday: 9 AM to 8 PM
Saturday: 9 AM to 2 PM
Sunday: 1 PM to 6 PM
The Crews Recreation Center is the Town of Matthews' first indoor recreation center. The Recreation Center is located at 1201 Crews Road (behind Matthews Police Station). In January 2006, the Town of Matthews began construction on the building. Doors were open to pubic on August 26, 2006. The Recreation Center will offer a variety of programs, athletic leagues and classes to the Matthews community. Call 704-708-4432 for open gym hours.

The McDowell Arts Center is located at 123 McDowell Street, adjacent to the Matthews Community Center. The former Agriculture Building was built in the 1920s as an extension of the old Matthews High School. In 2008 the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System transferred the building to the Town.
The "MAC" is utilized as dedicated space for the Arts! The facility hosts classes and programs, as well as gallery space with rotating monthly shows. The McDowell Arts Center is also be home to KidzArt and the Matthews Artists Guild! Call (704) 321-7275 for more information.

Individuals, organizations, and/or corporations that wish to use a park on a specific date and time for a special restrictive purpose, must reserve each facility. A Park Use Permit must be completed and the appropriate fees paid prior to the applicant receiving a Park Confirmation Letter. The philosophy of the department is that parks should be open and available to the general public on a daily basis. However, a corporation or business may reserve a park for a one-day special event. Baucom Park, 601 Sadie Drive
This 1 acre park contains picnic shelters with tables, outdoor grills and playground and swings.
Fountain Rock Park, 311 S. Trade St.
Fountain Rock Park is an oasis in the midst of the Four Mile Creek Greenway. This passive park is for relaxation or a break from your walk along the greenway. Here you can sit and meditate at the flowing fountain, have a picnic, or read a book.
KP Park, 320 E. Matthews St.
This pocket park near Town Hall and the Public Library is a Certified Wildlife Habitat that serves as a passive area to enjoy the outdoors with the pergola and seating. The park is dedicated in memory of Kay Plyler, who was a long time Town employee and the Assistant Town Manager at the time of her passing.
Matthews-Sardis Park, 9650 Sardis Rd.
Squirrel Lake Park,
This 2.8 acre park contains a gazebo-style picnic shelter with tables, playground and swings, paved walking trail, open grass play area and restrooms.
1631 Pleasant Plains Rd.
This 29 acre park contains a fishing pond with pier, 2 shelters with picnic tables, outdoor grill areas, restrooms, playground and swings, horseshoe pit, 12 hole disc golf course, walking trails, parking and a connector trail to Four Mile Creek Greenway.
120 S. Trade St.
This park is the home of the Summer Concert & Movie Series, various special events, school programs and more! It features a performance stage, sand play/dance area, outdoor grill and picnic area, brick patio and picnic areas, playground, sand volleyball court, Veterans Memorial Site, restrooms and free wi-fi. The volleyball court is used on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reservation is not required. Hours of operation are dawn to dusk.
Town Green Park,
232 Matthews Station St.
Located in front of Town Hall and the Public Library, the Town Green is a nice place to experience the sights and sounds of Matthews with a gazebo, benches, and open grass areas.
10140 Northeast Parkway
This 5.24 acre park contains picnic shelters and tables, an outdoor grill, walking trail, open grass play area, playground and swings, and restrooms.
Four Mile Creek Greenway
Four Mile Creek Greenway is a joint project between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County that contains 2 miles of walking trails and multiple neighborhood connectors.
Parking is available at Squirrel Lake and the Matthews Community Center.

Matthews Community Garden, 427 Covenant Church Lane
Local residents that do not have space in your own yard can still have the opportunity to plant flowers and vegetables in your local community garden. Get your garden gloves and shovels ready and get outdoors to enjoy the harvest. To get started, please fill out a Matthews Community Garden application and e-mail to the address listed below.
Cost: The cost to be a part of the Matthews Community Garden is $20 per year for a single plot, plus $15 for water, for a total of $35 per year. The average garden plot is 8'x6'. Please wait until application approval before sending payment.
Waiting List: As the garden reaches its maximum capacity, applicants will be notified that they have been placed on the waiting list for the Community Garden. (At this time the Garden is at capacity.)
Registration: Applications are being accepted now, though currently all plots in the Mattehws Community Garden are filled. Names are added to the waiting list from submitted applications. As plots become open, they will be filled by names on the waiting list. Matthews' Residents will have priority placement on the list.
Plot renewal occurs in December and January of each year. If individuals decide not to renew their plots, spaces will be reassigned to those on the waiting list or a new garden applicant.
