MATTHEWS - The Matthews Alive Festival is celebrating its 26th year with several special elements for attendees to enjoy. Matthews Alive is an annual four-day family festival over Labor Day weekend in downtown Matthews. This year the festival kicks off Friday, August 31, concluding Monday, September 3.
2018 Event Design
The poster design for 2018 has once again been commissioned by Carol Hambridge of Matthews. The collage depicts the festival’s focus on entertainment, family activities, and downtown Matthews—all with a “retro” twist. Carol’s design will be placed on posters, flyers, ads, sponsor merchandise, and t-shirts to promote the festival.
This year’s Matthews Alive Parade theme is “Peace, Love, & Harmony.” Entries are encouraged to decorate with the theme in mind, and self-made float entries that utilize the theme will be given entry fee refunds. Giveaways representing the theme will be handed out during the parade, and throughout the weekend.
Keeping the parade theme in mind, the Grand Marshals for the 2018 Matthews Alive Parade have been selected. These individuals are making a difference in specific communities within Matthews, are honoring the past, and are making it easier for everyone to live together harmoniously in the future.
Iris DeVore has worked tirelessly in the non-profit and senior communities of Matthews, establishing clubs, facilities, and resources for both groups since 1972. She led the efforts for the establishment of the Matthews Help Center and the Levine Senior Center, and has promoted thousands of hours of senior programming, awareness, and activities for decades.
Harvey Boyd is an activist and historian in his native Crestdale community, promoting the preservation of its art and storytelling, as well as its revitalization and growth in the future. He is also an advocate for the preservation of the historic African-American cemetery off Monroe Road.
Matthews Alive is honored to have Iris and Harvey lead the 2018 Parade, and represent the best of “Peace, Love, and Harmony” for us in Matthews!

Important Note for Matthews Alive Street Closures
For the third year, an early closure of South Trade Street will be in effect during festival set-up. Beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday August 31, South Trade Street will be closed from the intersection of John Street to McDowell Street. This change will allow vendors to set up safely without the concern for vehicular traffic.
Matthews Elementary afternoon pick-ups and bus travel will still be possible from McDowell, from the access road from Sadie Drive to church parking lots, and from lower South Trade. The Matthews Police Department will be on hand during afternoon pick-ups to assist drivers and buses through the closure.
The Matthews Alive Festival hosts over 160 regional artisans, a Family Fun Zone with rides, games and amusements, the Kids Connection with crafts, a petting zoo and train rides, a wide array of food vendors, the Southeast’s Largest Labor Day Parade, and much more! The festival attracts more than 150,000 attendees each year and continues to grow.
