Matthews, NC – Matthews Mayor Paul Bailey today released the following statement regarding the North Carolina General Assembly’s passage of HB 514, legislation giving certain localities the ability to create their own charter school:

“With the passage of HB 514, we now have the right to provide another public school option for families in Matthews, should it be needed in the future. While we are fortunate to have excellent schools in Matthews, the problem is there are too few of them and CMS has indicated that new schools in our area are decades away. HB 514 will allow Matthews the option to build schools, while partnering with CMS to educate our students.

“While we are pleased with the bill’s passage, we do not anticipate any action on this in the foreseeable future. Any action taken would only be after a period of due diligence including significant public input, financial analysis, and research. We will continue to work with CMS in our shared goal of providing the best possible education for our children.

“It has been disappointing to see a lot of misinformation throughout this debate. Matthews is committed to advocating for an excellent education for all students; and to continue fostering a community of inclusivity.”
