With the forecast indicating Hurricane Florence is headed toward North Carolina, Town of Matthews officials are preparing. We are working closely with the National Weather Service and other state and local partners to stay informed. We encourage all residents to prepare now by taking the following precautions:
- Check nearby storm drains and remove any debris. Do not place anything on or around storm drains.
- Move outdoor furniture, garbage cans, etc. inside. They could become dangerous with high winds
-Ensure you have food, water, and medications for each person in your home for seven days.
-Be ready for power, utility, and phone service outages. Keep your mobile phones charged.
-Refill your gas tank and stock your vehicle with emergency supplies and a change of clothes
-Check out www.ready.gov to learn more about how to prepare.
As the storm approaches, flooding is possible. Be aware of quickly moving water and flooded roads. Do not drive around barricades, or through high water. Remember, turn around, don’t drown!
Remember that greenways are prone to flooding. The bridges along the greenways are designed for water to go over them when the levels rise. It can be dangerous to be in this area during heavy rains and severe storms. For your safety, do not access greenways or parks during severe weather.
If you’re told to evacuate, do so immediately. Know how you’ll communicate with family members and neighbors once the storm passes.
