Matthews, NC – The Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) has voted unanimously to delay part of the E. John Street/Old Monroe Road widening project from S. Trade Street to I-485. The final step to officially delay the project will come in August 2019 when the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) is adopted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Board.

After years of discussions with the NCDOT and extensive public input, the Town of Matthews requested the delay to protect the historic downtown core, and to allow other transportation projects near E. John Street to be completed as scheduled and see how traffic patterns are influenced by those projects.

“Our residents want to see Matthews remain a small, friendly town with historic charm, and a welcoming and walkable downtown area,” said Mayor Paul Bailey. “We are very pleased the CRTPO supported our request to delay the project.”

The other sections of the U-4714 project will be widened as scheduled by NCDOT. For more information, please visit www.matthewsnc.gov/eastjohnstreet.
