On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at approximately 4:37 p.m., we received a call from the Loss Prevention Officer at the Best Buy located at 2109 Matthews Township Pkwy., stating that a fraudulent purchase was just made at the store. The responding Matthews officer spoke to the Loss Prevention Officer upon his arrival, and was informed that a man inside of the store had just made a fraudulent purchase of a computer for $2,800.00. When the Matthews officer made contact with the suspect inside of the store, the suspect ran out the front door and was then pursued by the officer. When the officer caught up with the suspect and attempted to place him under arrest, the suspect physically resisted and began to assault the officer. After a brief altercation, the suspect was placed under arrest and identified as Mr. Darius Najee Battey (DOB – 09/02/1993) of Saint. Albans, N.Y. The Matthews officer was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released.
After further investigation, Mr. Battey was found to be in the possession of a fraudulent New Jersey identification, and also had outstanding warrants out of Carteret County, NC. See all charges listed below.
Warrant Service –Possession of Marijuana (Carteret County);
Warrant Service – Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Carteret County);
Attempt to Obtain Property by False Pretense;
Resist, Obstruct or Delay a Public Officer;
Assault with Physical Injury on a LE/Prob/Parole Officer.
