Matthews, NC - During tonight's meeting, the Town Board voted to appoint Ken McCool to the Board of Commissioners position vacated last week by Barbara Dement. With family in attendance, McCool was then sworn into office.

"I'm excited to serve the Town of Matthews and to work towards building a brighter future for generations to come,” said Commissioner McCool. “I'm also looking forward to working collaboratively with the Board, and I thank them for their support. I would like to thank Ms. Dement for her service to the Town."

“We are happy to welcome Commissioner Ken McCool to the Town Board,” said Mayor John Higdon. “I am pleased we were able to quickly fill the vacancy so the Town can continue to address the important issues before us.”

McCool ran in the 2019 Board of Commissioners election. As the seventh-place finisher, he was the next highest vote getter in the November race. North Carolina General Statute requires that the Board of Commissioners make an appointment to fill the vacant position on the Board. Commissioners voted 4-2 to appoint McCool.

McCool’s term will run through December 2021.
