April 1, 2020 (2nd UPDATE)

The evidence, in this case, indicates that this incident stemmed from an earlier roadway dispute on Hwy. 74 between the victim and the suspect, which sadly resulted in the death of Mr. Brett Thomas Butler.  Matthews Police Department Investigators have worked tirelessly since this occurred to identify, locate and apprehend the person responsible.  The suspect was ultimately identified as a 17-year-old male.  A Juvenile Secure Custody Order for the charge of Murder was then applied for and obtained.

On Wednesday, April 1, 2020, the suspect was taken into custody in Stallings, NC.  Due to his status as a juvenile, his name will not be released.

The Matthews Police Department would like to thank CMPD, the FBI Violent Criminal Task Force, Stallings Police Department, Monroe Police Department, and the Union County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and continued partnership in this case.
