Matthews Fire & EMS is always looking for volunteer members. Matthews has opportunities for Firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians, Fire Corp members and Explorers. Volunteers firefighters and EMT's are required to dedicate 36 hours per month.

Matthews also offers great community programs like the Fire Corps, whose focus is on community preparedness and resiliency, and the Explorer program (through the Boy Scouts of America) for high school students, male and female, ranging from 14-18 years old.

The Department provides all necessary equipment and training to become certified as a firefighter. Volunteers have many benefits such as:

• Being engaged in Community activities
• Modern, state-of-the-art equipment and apparatus
• Training expenses paid by the department
• Monetary stipend and incentives *
• Leather Boots, Leather Helmet or Littman Stethoscope*

Firefighters & EMT's

These members are the backbone of the department when it comes time to respond to emergencies.  Anyone wishing to volunteer as a firefighter or EMT is encouraged to apply (see link above). Volunteers do receive compensation for their service. Applicants selected to proceed to our hiring process will go through a formal interview, as well as a department agility test (MPAT). Additional items, such as a criminal background, will be required prior to being brought on as a member.

***Volunteer applications are now being accepted for newly certified EMT's and anyone wishing to obtain the NC Firefighter certification. Certified firefighters and and EMT's are always encouraged to apply.

Fire Corps/CERT

Developed by FEMA, Fire Corps & CERT exist to allow persons wishing to serve when emergencies occur, but not serving in front-line emergency response. Explorer Post 911

The Explorers is a division of the Boy Scouts of America (however both females and males are welcome to join) in which students, ages 14 – 18, are exposed to the fire and emergency services and how we operate. Students older than 16 are permitted to begin firefighter training and progress to interior firefighter training upon turning 18.
